A. P. rules out talks on Palar

J. Balaji

NEW DELHI: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Thursday ruled out talks with the Tamil Nadu government on the construction of a reservoir across the Palar river in Chittoor district to store 2,000 tmcft of water.

“We will go ahead with the project as soon as the Supreme Court gives its clearance as the issue is pending in the apex court,” he told mediapersons here.

There should not be any objection from Tamil Nadu as whatever Andhra Pradesh did on the issue was well within its rights. Necessary permission had been obtained and tenders finalised, he said.

When asked about the Tamil Nadu government’s objection that the project would affect drinking water supply and irrigational needs in Vellore, Kancheepuram and Chennai districts, the Chief Minister shot back: “It is a more political one as the opposition parties [AIADMK] in Tamil Nadu were trying to make it an issue. It is not an issue at all.”
