KARUR: Everything is set for the laying of foundation stone for projects worth Rs.700 crore under the aegis of Public Works Department in Tiruchi Circle. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi is to lay the foundation stone for projects including construction of a new barrage across the Cauvery at Kattalai near Mayanur in Karur district; permanent flood protection works to benefit Karur, Tiruchi, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts; renovation of Grand Anicut Canal in Orathanadu and Pattukottai areas of Thanjavur district and desilting works in Nagapattinam district on June 24 in Tiruchi, according to PWD Minister Durai Murugan.

In what is billed as the first phase of interlinking intra-state rivers, a new road-cum-barrage is to come up at a cost of Rs.165 crore just 250 metres downstream of the existing Kattalai Bed Regulator at Mayanur in Karur district, the Minister told the media at Mayanur after inspecting the site of the proposed barrage.

For the current year, the State has sanctioned Rs.50 crore for it.

Mr. Durai Murugan sought to allay fears of the delta farmers with regard to barrage construction, saying the Kattalai Barrage would in no way affect their irrigation rights and availability of water. Transport Minister K.N. Nehru, Karur MP K.C. Palanisamy, MLAs P. Kamaraj, Anbil Periyasamy and K.N. Sekaran as also senior PWD officials accompanied him.
