Farmers call off strike at Armoor
HYDERABAD: The six-day indefinite strike by the all-party committee demanding purchase of red jowar at Armoor was called off on Wednesday following the government’s decision to pay Rs. 1,540 a quintal for red jowar.
A team of officials led by Joint Collector Neetu Prasad and others held two rounds of talks with the representatives of the committee and succeeded in convincing that the government was willing to pay Rs. 1,540 a quintal for the red jowar.
According to the agreement, the AP Seeds Corporation would pay Rs. 1,200 per quintal while the government would chip in with Rs. 340 a quintal in August.
After the agitating all-party committee leaders were convinced, the Joint Collector offered them lemon juice. Officials also assured them that action would be initiated against Mahipal Reddy, the trader, who had procured over 5 lakh quintals of red jowar but failed to make total payments to the farmers. A committee would also be constituted to look into the problems faced by the red jowar farmers.
