Ban on appointments to aided colleges goes

Special Correspondent

V.S. Achuthanandan says appointments could be made to 642 posts approved by a high-level committee.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to withdraw the ban on appointments to aided colleges.

Briefing the media on the Cabinet decisions, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said that the appointments could be made to 642 posts approved by a high-level committee, but excluding the posts filled as per court orders.

The Chief Minister said that the Union government would be requested to advise the President to take a decision in favour of establishing a Bench of the Kerala High Court in Thiruvananthapuram. Mr. Achuthanandan said that the strike by advocates in Thiruvananthapuram demanding the Bench had taken a wrong turn. They should avoid propaganda and steer the agitation through the right path.

He said that the government had done a number of steps to achieve the objective. The Cabinet and the Assembly had passed resolutions and an all-party delegation had gone to Delhi to represent the matter.

Congratulated

The Chief Minister said that the Cabinet congratulated the filmmakers and artistes who won the national film awards. The government would present Rs.1 lakh to Priyanandan who directed the film that won the award for the best film. The Cabinet sanctioned Rs.3 crore to the Travancore Titanium Products to overcome the financial crisis faced by the public sector company, the Chief Minister said.

Fishermen employed in mechanised boats, workers of fishing harbours and peelings sheds would be given free rations for 45 days. This was in view of the ban on trawling from June 16 to July 31.

Neela Gangadharan would be posted as Additional Chief Secretary in charge of Cooperation and Parliamentary Affairs. Devikulam Sub-Collector Ratan Kelkar would be moved as Director of the Information Technology Mission.

The former Chief Conservator of Forests V. Gopinath would be posted as Director of Lotteries. IAS Officer P. Salim, who is on deputation from West Bengal, would be posted as General Manager of the Civil Supplies Corporation.
