Gagan starts as favourite

Coimbatore: Gagan Verma, who won the LG Southern India Amateur tournament in Bangalore last week, starts as the favourite in the LG Coimbatore Open Amateur golf championship, which tees off at the par-72 Coimbatore Golf Club course here on Tuesday.

“The victory has certainly boosted my confidence. I have ironed out my grey areas and am looking forward to another win here,” said Gagan.

Giving Gagan a run for the money in this prestigious fourth leg of the LG Indian Amateur tour will be the cream of Indian talent comprising Abhishek Jha, Manav Das, Vikram Rana, Simarjeet Singh, H.S. Kang, Tarun Ghogale, S. Bahuguna, Jasjeet Singh and Karan Vasudeva to name a few.

The top-ranked Abhishek came out with flying colours in the opener, the LG ITC Classic Open, while Rahul walked away with the honours in the LG Jaypee Open. Defending champion Raj Randhawa will be a notable absentee as he turned professional soon after the Coimbatore tour last year. The hard wind, which is blowing from the Palghat gap, is likely to make it tough for the golfers. The strategically located hazards, in the shape of water bodies and bunkers, would add further challenge. LG Electronics has taken on the mantle of umbrella sponsorship of the Indian Golf Union’s National amateur tour for the second year in succession. — Sports Reporter
