Change in admission criteria in NITs
Staff Reporter
KOZHIKODE: The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) have introduced a major change in their admission criteria for students from States other than the State where the respective NIT is located.
From this academic year, seats reserved for students from other States will be on the basis of all-India merit.
The norm literally takes away the seats reserved for students of particular States (State-specific seats) and throws open the competition for students of all States based on their ranking in the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE).
A communication was posted on the website, www.ccb.nic.in, managed by the Central Counselling Board constituted to organise centralised counselling and allocation of seats in NITs and other participating institutes.
It is perceived that this would help high ranking students from all States, with lower ranking students losing an opportunity to compete in seats or courses, as there would be no reservation for students of any State. It may also open up new opportunities for students of a particular State to opt for a course in a particular NIT, which he/she could not have got last year, as the course was not reserved for students of that State in that NIT. There are 20 NITs with over 10,000 seats, and the pattern of admission to half the seats will change this academic year.
