Speakers praise Dravidian ideals that accorded equal status to women

CUDDALORE: The two-day conference of the DMK women’s wing that concluded here on Sunday discussed at length the issues confronting women and how the DMK Government had systematically resolved them, true to the ideals of the Dravidian movement.

Scores of speakers who dealt with multifarious topics praised the Dravidian ideals that accorded equal status to women and scoffed at the social evils that held women in servitude.

The notable among them was Kayalvizhi, daughter of M.K.Azhagiri, who spoke on ‘Valluvar and truth.’

The rule of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was in conformity with the tenets of ‘Thirukkural.’

Since truth was the foundation of the regime, Mr. Karunanidhi could weather all storms and emerge victorious against all odds.

The Chief Minister took everything in his stride, flummoxing his detractors.

Ms. Kayalvizhi hailed him as the “living Valluvar” because he was so immersed in the couplets that made him erect the Asia’s biggest statue for Thiruvalluvar at Kanyakumari. It even made him suggest the dome design of the Valluvar Kottam be adopted for the proposed Secretariat complex.

Union Minister Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan, who spoke on ‘Women’s status in Indian politics,’ said that except on three occasions, Tamil Nadu had always returned women to the Lok Sabha.

It was too much to expect the women representatives to master everything before elections, but it was their duty to equip themselves after elections.

For certainly, the society and the government would recognise those who had risen to the occasion, Ms. Jagadeesan said.
