Private phone operators have been laying cables in our area for over a month. The workers, with scant regard for the inconvenience to others, cut roads and damage electric cables, almost on all streets. There are no Corporation officials monitoring the work and the contractor does not seem to care for any rules and regulations. The debris have been left as they are on the streets, posing a great risk to residents. Representations made to the Corporation have yielded no result yet. The only people who should be appreciated are the local TNEB officer (AE) and some of his staff, who have been having sleepless nights for the past 40 days. Will the Corporation help us get the debris cleared and roads re-laid? Somasundaram Narendran, Vadapalani Inadequate stockThis refers to the City Pulse article on public distribution system (The Hindu, 9-6-2008). Contrary to the statement made by the Food Minister, the supply of foodgrains and pulses is curtailed for consumers at the retail outlets. Card-holders are denied ration items for want of adequate stock. Apart from this, consumers undergo many ordeals to get new ration cards despite furnishing relevant documents to the officials concerned. K. Ramadoss, Aynavaram Reduce phone rentalsThe BSNL has slashed STD rates by 50 per cent for its mobile and landline network. The monthly rental under the “Super One India Plan” was reduced from Rs.799 to Rs.299. Further, the BSNL, according to its chairman Goyal, has a number of attractive schemes in offing, offering competitive rates. All these concessions are really beneficial to the customers who are thankful to the BSNL. I request the BSNL to reduce the monthly rental for landline connections (under general package) from Rs.180 to Rs. 150. Further senior citizens may be given 25 per cent concession in rental. After all, the MTNL is offering concessions to senior citizens. R. Rajagopalan Puzhuthivakkam Bus haltsThe following buses do not stop at Simpson or P.Orr & Sons stop. 17M (Express), 17M (Deluxe), 54L (LSS), 54L (Deluxe), 54L (Express) and A18. This puts much hardship to the commuters. As there are a lot of companies nearby the stop, the authorities should make arrangements for theses buses to stop at Simpson or P.Orr & Sons. The bus 54L (LSS) sometimes stops here, but most of the time skips the stop, N. Uma Valasaravakkam Gas connectionLPG New Domestic connection, Government has increased the rate but to provide new connection, Gas Agencies insisting ration card for proof of residence. Every consumer cannot have ration card, some may lived in joint families and separated due to various reasons. Some may move for employment purpose. Oil companies in their web site clearly given that they can provide any of the following documents: 1. Driving Licence 2. Voters ID card 3. Lease Agreement or rent receipt 4. Self Declaration attested by Gazetted Officer. If the gas agencies wants to verify the address of the applicant, they can depute or engage personnel, send them to applicant address and enquire with surrounding people and confirm the address. After satisfying themselves, they can give new LPG Domestic Cooking Connection. I appeal to Government to advise the LPG Cooking Agencies not to insist on ration cards. T. Gunaseelan, Ambattur Restore banSome time ago, the commercial transport vehicles such as vans, lorries were banned during prime hours on important roads. Of late, the vehicles are seen in a large number, impeding traffic and also contributing to more pollution. It is requested that authorities take steps to restore ban on plying of such vehicles during prime time (9 am to 8 pm). E. Srinivasan through email Circular train serviceA circular route from Arakonam to Arakonam via Thiruvallur, Avadi, Beach, Egmore, Tambaram, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram with a frequency of five minutes in both directions is the need of the hour. Another train from Velachery to Arakonam via Mylapore, Beach, Avadi, Thiruvallur, Arakonam, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Tambaram in both directions with a frequency of 10 minutes will be of immense help to suburban residents. Will Southern Railway do the needful”? R. Sukumaran, Madambakkam
