In the 2005-6 railway budget it was announced that Madurai-Coimbatore metre gauge track would be converted to broad gauge. Consequently, trains to Coimbatore/Madurai were terminated at Podanur/Dindigul from May 2006. Some trains in this sector have been cancelled. Even though more than two years have passed, the conversion work between Dindigul and Podanur has not yet been taken up. Now passengers in this stretch cannot go to Madurai or to Coimbatore Junction. Will the Southern Railway take up the work immediately or restore the rail connectivity between Coimbatore and Madurai? G. Chandrasekaran, Udumalpet. Install street lightsStreet lights should be installed on the road between Saru Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Kombupallam in Sathyamangalam in Erode District. Plus Two students go home after special classes at 8 p.m. and most of them ride bicycles from the places where they study, to their homes in various places. There is heavy traffic on Sathyamangalam-Bannari Road at this time. Sathyamangalam Municipality and Tamil Nadu Electricity Board will do well to install the lights as early as possible in the interests of the students in the region. G.N. Devaraj, Bhavanisagar. Stop raggingThe Raghavan Committee appointed by the Supreme Court to monitor measures to stop ragging in higher educational institutions has asked regulatory bodies to strictly enforce anti-ragging regulations. After the Supreme Court’s intervention and the formation of the Raghavan Committee, ragging incidents have come down. Sona College of Technology at Salem has been following the guidelines for many years and no ragging has taken place in the college for over a decade. Even before the first year students join the college, the principal, wardens and faculty members meet senior students and advise them not to indulge in ragging. They are also warned about the severe punishment that awaits them for ragging. Faculty members also visit hostels late in the night and interact with the students. V.S.Venkatavaradan, Salem. General knowledgeIn spite of getting good marks in schools and colleges students find it difficult to get jobs. In some cases, even if they land jobs there will not be any relation between the students’ education and job. The main reason for this is that they don’t give much importance to general knowledge and communication skills. They should update their general knowledge by watching televisions, listening to news channels, reading newspapers, magazines, books, etc. They should have interest in politics, economics, history, science etc. V. Joseph Emmanuvel, Tiruchengode. (Readers can mail to cbereaders@thehindu.co.in with address and phone number)
