The cameras can rotate 360 degrees and follow a person up to a range of one kilometre The system will also be used to monitor the behaviour of railway staff towards passengers
Security beefed up: Newly-installed surveillance camera at Kacheguda Railway Station. HYDERABAD: The South Central Railway (SCR), in its effort to step up security measures at Kacheguda railway station, is installing high-tech surveillance system in the station with a cost of over Rs. 29 lakh. The advanced surveillance system consists of nine static and two Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras with Internet enabled digital video recorder and display monitors, which would be interconnected with data cables. The PTZ cameras are specialised cameras that can rotate 360 degrees and can be controlled to move left to right, up and down and zoom in and out. Costing about Rs. 1 lakh each, these cameras can be used to follow a person, who is on the move, and even can zoom-in on the person’s face and his belongings up to a range of one kilometre, explains SCR Hyderabad Divisional Security Commissioner, B. Ramakrishna. “Last year only Rs. 8 lakhs were sanctioned for setting up of a surveillance system at this station. However, we did not want to compromise on the quality and following the suggestions from different railway departments, the amount was raised to Rs. 29 lakh,” informs Mr. Ramakrishna. The system can store one week’s data and images pertaining to one particular hour of any day within the week can be traced. The system controls are housed at Railway Protection Force (RPF) post on platform no.1 and would be manned round-the-clock by RPF personnel. Though the primary objective of surveillance system is to keep a constant vigil on the movement of passengers with suspicious movement, it would also help in monitoring the behaviour of railway staff towards passengers. “The entire cabling work and installation of cameras is completed and in a week the system would be in operation,” said Mr. Ramakrishna. He further added that similar surveillance system would be installed at Kurnool and Mahabubnagar railway stations.
