HYDERABAD: Chairman of the State Haj Committee Hafiz Peer Shabbir Ahmed has resigned following an assurance reportedly given by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to nominate him as the Congress candidate for the byelections to the State Legislative Council. The vacancy was caused from the Assembly constituency following the resignation of Telangana Rashtra Samiti member H.A. Rahman. Mr. Ahmed, whose tenure is to end next year, put in his papers on Friday after meeting the Chief Minister. Mr. Ahmed is also the State president of the influential Jamiatul Ulema. Meanwhile, a group of Congress leaders belonging to the minority community staged a demonstration at Gandhi Bhavan, the party headquarters on Saturday, protesting against the nomination of Mr. Ahmed. They said only a party member should be fielded for the Council seat. The protestors raised slogans against the party. They said that Hafiz Peer Shabbir Ahmed had no connection with the Congress party and was an active representative of the Jamiatul Ulema. Moreover, Mr. Ahmed was the chairman of the Haj Committee and there was no reason for the Congress to name him.
