Government must roll back petroleum prices: CPI

HYDERABAD: Communist Party of India deputy general secretary S. Sudhakar Reddy has predicted that the elections to Lok Sabha are likely to take place anytime after November.

“We will be left with no other option except to withdraw support if the Government does not roll back the latest increase in the prices of petroleum products,” he said. At the same time, he clarified that the CPI was not in a hurry to withdraw support.

Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, he, however, said any decision on withdrawal of support would be taken by the four Left parties as they had together decided to support the United Progressive Alliance coalition.

Replying to queries, Mr. Reddy expressed surprise at the way Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi reverted to the India-U.S. nuclear deal issue by harping on the importance of nuclear energy to the country.

“The talk of nuclear deal comes at a time when the issue had been put on the backburner and there are indications that the U.S. has almost closed the deal. We are surprised at the way the Prime Minister is hoping to get our support to the deal now,” he said.

The senior CPI leader reiterated that there was no change in the Left’s stand on the nuclear deal .
