HYDERABAD: A record 2,350 units of blood was collected at a camp organised by the Andhra Pradesh AIDS Control Society (APSACS) at the Exhibition Grounds to mark the World Blood Donor’s Day. This is the first time that APSACS held such a camp in connection with the day. Usually, it organises blood donation camp on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti. The donors on Saturday included 60 to 70 women in the 20-25 year age group, and Venkateswarlu (49) of the city who has, so far, offered blood 62 times. Among the donors were students of Gandhi and Osmania Medical Colleges, police and army personnel, NCC cadets, nurses and government staff. Representatives of NGOs like Lions, blood banks, Red Cross Society besides several social organisations mobilised the donors, which resulted in ‘good’ public response at the camp. Special driveInaugurating the camp, Health Minister S. Chandrasekhar said a special blood donation drive would be conducted by organising 4,000 camps across the State this year to meet the requirement of 12 lakh units. Ms. Jeevitha, actress, and APSACS Director R.V. Chandravadan were among those present.
