Table Tennis
CHENNAI: Sharath Kamal, the lone Indian male table tennis player for the Beijing Olympic Games, will practise with Germany’s Wosik Torden and Peter Franz, both ranked inside the top 100, in Barcelona from July 16 to 31. To add variety to the preparations, two Chinese and a Spaniard (Sharath’s good friend in the Spanish league Alfredo) will play with Sharath. “All players have different styles, one Chinese is a pen-holder while the other is a defence player. So, we’ll have variety,” said Sharath from Barcelona. Three Indians — former National champion Subhajit Saha, Pathik Mehta and Zubin Kumar are likely to travel to Barcelona to train with Sharath. The Commonwealth champion will also practise in France with top French and Greece players from July 1 to 11. A three-member French team, all qualified for the Olympics, will play practice matches in Paris and Vittel. “Training in France will be of great help as some of the French players are very experienced and very good players,” said Sharath. “I will know how to train well before a major event like the Olympics.” — Principal Correspondent
