Naren Kumar continues fine run

KOCHI: With many hairpin bends and jumps, the twisty Kumluca stage offers a big treat to spectators. India’s V.R. Naren Kumar was at his best on this tricky 10-km stretch as he moved to the 11th spot in the Production Cars category in the Rally of Turkey at Kemer on Friday.

Naren was an impressive ninth in the seventh stage at Kemer but the day was quite tough. Though the Team Sidvin India star, a six-time National champion, lost his Subaru Impreza’s steering mount in the very deceptive fifth stage at Perge, his vast experience saw him through.

The 34-year-old was 17th after the super special stage at Antalya, the rally-opener, but found his way smartly through the maze smartly, finishing 15th in the second stage at Perge and 12th in the next at Myra which has some very tight corners.

With many big names, including defending Production Cars World champion Toshi Arai and Nasser Al-Attiyah, struggling, Team Sidvin has asked Naren to take it easy and just finish the event. —Principal Correspondent
