Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: One per cent of posts of college lecturers will be reserved for the hearing impaired as part of the three per cent job reservation quota for the differently abled, Higher Education Secretary K. Ganesan said here on Thursday.

Inaugurating the 38th Planetarium programme on ‘Sun and Planets’, produced for the hearing impaired by the Periyar Science and Technology Centre, he said of the remaining two per cent of the quota, one each was for visually challenged and physically challenged candidates.

“There are a total of 1,500 vacancies [college lecturer posts] and when we fill them up the one per cent reservation for the hearing impaired would be implemented,” he added.

Mr. Ganesan, who also released a book of the show’s script in Braille, said the government would sanction around Rs.3 crore to renovate the planetarium. Steps would be initiated to appoint a sign language interpreter in the planetarium, he added.

Tamilnadu Science and Technology Centre Executive Director P. Iyamperumal said the show for the hearing impaired, conducted with the help of a sign language interpreter, would be held on Mondays at 10.15 a.m. “Initially we are making available the slot on Mondays. Depending on the response, we will add more shows,” he added.
