Up in arms: Traders demonstrating in New Delhi on Tuesday in protest against the report on retail trade. NEW DELHI: Warning the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre not to take the trading community for granted, a large number of traders under the umbrella of the Confederation of All-India Traders demonstrated at Jantar Mantar here on Tuesday in protest against “derogatory” remarks about traders made in the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations report on retail trade. The traders burnt copies of the ICRIER report that was submitted to the Government recently and described it as a “biased and misleading bunch of documents ignoring the ground realities of Indian retail trade”. Demanding that the Government take urgent steps to chalk out a policy for modernisation of traditional retail in the country, Confederation secretary-general Praveen Khandelwal said the Centre should set up a working group to look into ways to strengthen internal trade and take steps to provide financial assistance to traders for adopting modern business techniques to face the onslaught of global challenge. Mr. Khandelwal said corporate retailers should be restricted to areas of their core competence for which they have been given various concessions by the Government. “Diversion of funds and resources attained due to such concessions should not be allowed to be used in retail trade as it will promote an uneven playing field for traders. Let the Government give us such concessions and frame a Micro and Small Retailers Act containing cluster approach for linking even an individual shop into a chain,” he added.
