Minority status for Jain community in Delhi

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Cabinet on Tuesday granted minority status to the Jain community in the Capital.

The decision, taken in response to the community’s longstanding demand, would primarily help it manage its educational institutions according to the parameters specified for minority institutions.

After the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the grant of minority status in Delhi to the Jain community, which already enjoys such status in several States, would help it effectively manage its educational institutions. She expressed confidence that the fulfilment of this long-pending demand would benefit the Jain community.

Ms. Dikshit also announced that the Cabinet had given its approval for registration of the E-Governance Society of the Delhi Government which would facilitate implementation of an e-governance road map for providing services to citizens and business and thereby ensuring transparency and efficiency in operation. The road map includes IT infrastructure, IT architecture, application architecture, networking and communication architecture.

The Chief Minister said the new Society would also facilitate convergence of different websites of the Delhi Government and local bodies to enable citizens to have a single-point access on their computers. This, she said, would speed up the pace of making Delhi a cyber-State in the next few years.

The Society would also take all necessary steps to promote efficiency, reduce delays, enhance accountability, transparency and objectivity in the functioning of the Delhi Government. It would also coordinate with various government departments and agencies and help in formulation and implementation of policies, procedures, guidelines and e-governance for improvement of the services used by the citizens.

The Society would also promote and disseminate information technology culture in Delhi so that the common man could avail of the benefits of information technology and e-governance.
