Advani regrets releasing book on Benazir

New Delhi: After objections by the Pakistan People’s Party, senior BJP leader L.K. Advani on Monday expressed “regret” for releasing a controversial book on Benazir Bhutto, saying its contents were “disturbing” to anyone who knew the slain former Pakistan Prime Minister.

Mr. Advani conveyed his views to PPP spokesman Farhatullah Babar, who called on the BJP leader to register his objections over the release of ‘Goodbye Shehzadi’ last month.

London-based journalist Shyam Bhatia, in his book, claimed that Benazir personally transferred nuclear secrets to North Korea by smuggling classified CDs in her overcoat.

“I regret having attended the function. Had I read the contents of the book, I would not have gone for the launch,” Mr. Advani was quoted by BJP spokesman Rajiv Pratap Rudy as saying.

The BJP leader reiterated that Benazir was “a good friend” of his and that “the contents of the book are disturbing for anyone who knew her,” Mr. Rudy said. — PTI
