The National Green Corps unit of the Government Upper Primary School in Pudukottai recently organised world environment day celebrations. The Headmaster, C. Muthukaruppan, presided. The Vice-Chairman of the municipality, K. Naina Mohamed, who is also the president of the school village education committee, delivered a special address on the need for protecting the environment and creating awareness of the same among the people. He gave away prizes to the winners of the oratorical and painting competitions. NGC members cleaned the class rooms and the school campus. They also raised slogans underlining the importance of planting more saplings to protect the environment. The NGC coordinator, V. Gunaseelan, Councillor, Murugesan Samy, and teacher Vasuki spoke. The Bharath Scouts and Guides of the Pudukottai educational district observed Rajiv Gandhi’s death anniversary by administering anti-terrorism pledge to the scouts and guides and also the students at the Raniyar Government Higher Secondary School, Pudukottai town. The Chief Educational Officer, S. Chellam, administered the anti-terrorism pledge. The District Education Officer, M. Madevan Pillai, the district secretary of the Scouts and Guides V. Gunaseelan, district training commissioner, and S. Antonysami, the Headmistress of Raniyar Schoool, R. Bose, spoke. The scouts and guides of Punitha Arokya Annai Higher Secondary School, Keeranur, and Raniyar Government Girls Higher Secondary School, participated in the programme. The Government High School at Uppiliyakudi in Pudukottai district achieved 87 per cent results in the SSLC examinations. The school, which had been achieving 65 per cent result all these years, achieved better performance this year, thanks to the night study programme and also special classes conducted during the weekends. The initiative was taken by the Headmaster M. Muthukumar. The school secured cent per cent results in Mathematics and 92 per cent results in the other subjects. A total of 11 students scored more than 400 marks. P. Vijayakumar, son of a farmer, was the school topper with 473 out of 500 marks, with centum in Mathematics. M. Arunprakash was second with 460 marks and S. Damodaran was third with 457 marks. Damodaran scored centum in Mathematics. The Parent-Teachers’ Association, the School Development Committee and the local villagers celebrated the achievement of the school by felicitating the teachers, according to A. Selvendran, BT Assistant of the school. S. Kishore Raja, student of Mount Zion Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Pudukottai, secured the first rank in the Pudukottai educational district in the tenth (matriculation stream), scoring 471/500. Kishore, who aspires to become a software engineer, scored centum in Mathematics and Science. According to his father N. Subramanian, the youngster did not attend any private tuition except for the special coaching provided at the school. Correspondent Jayabarathan Chelliah felicitated the youngster and presented him with a book. Senior Principal Jonathan P. Jayabarathan and Principal S. Ravikumar commended the efforts of the student. Under the auspices of the National Green Corps of the Government High School in Kuthambur in Pudukottai district, ‘World Environment Day’ was celebrated recently. The Co-ordinator of Junior Red Cross Gurunathasundaram administered a pledge on environmental protection to students and teachers. School teachers Panchavarnam, Lakshminarayanan and Pandimadevi delivered lectures on the role of students in protecting and stepping up the forest cover. The Headmaster Gandhinathan presided. Prizes were distributed to students who won an elocution competition. Students of the Panchayat Union Primary School in Sivankovil in Pudukottai district took out an awareness rally in the village recently on compulsory enrolment of students. Carrying placards and raising slogans, they marched through a number of residential colonies in the village, sensitising the villagers to the importance of education and the advantages of the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan scheme. The Headmistress Jacintha Mary inaugurated the procession. A similar procession wa s taken out at Vellanjaar near Iluppur. The president of Village Education Committee Pitchai led the procession. The president of the Parent- Teacher Association Thavamani and the teacher Christin Antony participated. Thirumagal Higher Secondary School on Medical College Road in Thanjavur registered cent percent pass in the Tenth standard in Tamil medium this year. According to V. Senthamarai, Headmistress, thirty students secured above 400 marks, 35 students above 300 marks. M. Madumathi and G. Manikandan secured 100 out of 100 in Maths. K. Suganthi secured 100 out of 100 in Science. In Plus Two also, the school did well. The plus two pass percentage was 91.4 per cent and A. Kav itha came first in the school securing 1,033 out of 1,200.
