Fatal accidents involving two-wheelers are reported almost everyday. What has happened to the rule on helmet? The reports should invariably mention whether the riders were wearing helmets and indicate that the use of helmet would have saved lives. This will also encourage people to wear helmets, especially when driving on highways. The role of mother or wife is important in this respect. The police should also be instructed to enforce the rule strictly. S. Narayanan, East Tambaram Bus terminusThe bus terminus at Hastinapuram off Chromepet, where a number of MTC buses leave for various points in the city, lacks minimum amenities such as protective shelter from rain and shine, comfortable seats for commuters, who have to wait long for buses, a compound wall or a fence to prevent stray cattle and dogs from coming in. Several representations to the Minister and higher officials have been in vain. Moreover, there is no time-office or time-keeper to regulate the arrival and departure of buses. Hastinapuram being a growing suburb, the vehicular traffic, especially MTC buses, has increased tremendously. So, a modern bus terminus in the existing place cannot be an unreasonable demand on the part of the residents. K.V.Sivaswamy, Chromepet Special counter for senior citizensA single window counter, exclusively for senior citizens in all commercial banks, especially in large branches, through they can have all their transactions, is a much needed service. K.R. Ramachandran, Kodambakkam Tatkal systemThe Tatkal system is an indirect business management trick. Making a person pay for the distance that he or she does not travel and withdrawal of 30 per cent concession for senior citizen under the Tatkal system are part of an economy exploiting a person in emergency situation. It is not practical to plan journey schedule in advance. It is better to increase the travel fares more than under the Tatkal system. Dr. D. Venugopalan, Taramani West Mambalam’s transport woesThe century-old Egmore Railway Station is an important junction for most trains. But the residents of West Mambalam have no direct bus link to the station. They have to catch two or at times, three buses for travelling to Egmore. But the frequency and timings of all MTC buses passing through this area are not convenient. Mambalam Railway Station, from which one can go directly to Egmore by EMU train. is far away for those living in interior or remote areas. The services of 9, and 9A buses (via West Mambalam) were withdrawn long ago for reasons best known to the MTC officials. Same is the case with travelling to Koyambedu from West Mambalam. It will be a welcome gesture if the Transport Department introduces new service from K. K. Nagar to Parrys (via) the entire stretch of West Mambalam Main Road and covering both Egmore and Central stations, as in the case of frequent MTC services 17, 17D & 17E. At present there is only one service (11G) passing via Central, that too infrequent. R. Ramadurai West Mambalam Stormwater drainThe Krishna Nagar area in Pammal has developed in the recent past, mainly thanks to its close proximity to educational institutions, temples, hospitals, etc. Almost all streets in Krishna Nagar are having stormwater drains, except Pillaiyar Koil Second Street. The residents of the street have either to let out the used water onto the street or to keep it inside their premises. Underground sewer system is yet to come to the Pammal area. During 2005, Pammal Municipal authorities awarded the work of construction of stormwater drain for the Pillaiyar Koil Second Street. But, unfortunately, after some initial work, the contractor was advised to stop the work. Pammal Municipality is requested to resume the work on priority basis. R. Venkataraman Pammal Welcome stepThe decision, taken by the Chennai Corporation to impose fines on citizens creating nuisance in public and dumping garbage, is a welcome move. To start with, we can think of implementing this plan for a couple of zones (or Assembly segments) and making them role models, instead of going for a big bang approach for the entire Chennai city. This will also definitely help the officials study the challenges and take necessary corrective actions. A. Suresh Kumar George Town Satellite post office neededAdambakkam (Division No. 153A of Chennai Corporation, south east of Guindy) consists of residential segments named Mohanapuri, Brindavan Nagar, Mahalakshmi Nagar, Andal Nagar and so on. Unfortunately, its post office is located at Balakrishnapuram nearly two km away and more or less, adjoining Alandur or St. Thomas Mount Railway Station. The only alternative post office (satellite) is situated at Nilamangai Nagar which is also at a distance from these areas. Hence I request the Regional Superintendent of Post Offices to undertake a survey for establishing a satellite post office, preferably near the Corporation Zonal Office or somewhere in this area. M. Tyagarajan, Adambakkam Disposal of seized autorickshwsIt has been reported in The Hindu dated 31-5-08 that hundreds of autorickshaws, seized by the RTO officials for violation of law, remain unclaimed and the officials are in a fix about how to dispose of them. I would like to suggest that all these unclaimed vehicles be handed over to ex-servicemen’s organisations or to the retired police personnel free of cost or for a nominal amount, on the condition that the vehicles should get registered and the ownership retained by the allottees for a period of five years. Distribution of the unclaimed autorickshaws to various service organisations can also be considered N. Mohanakumari K. K. Nagar
