NEW DELHI: Mandeep Kaur clocked a career-best 51.80 seconds for the 400 metres while qualifying for the Beijing Olympics at the Ukrainian National Cup athletics championships in Yalta on Friday.

For someone whose previous best is a 53.34, clocked once each in 2007 (Patiala) and this year (Kochi), this was a phenomenal feat by Mandeep as she crossed the Olympics qualification ‘B’ standard of 52.55 seconds.

Manjeet Kaur, the National record holder, also achieved that criterion as she coasted to 52.08s, her best in two years.

J. J. Shobha dropped out after four events in heptathlon, faring rather poorly till then.

She had a 14.12 for the 100-metre hurdles, high jumped 1.59, had a 12.13 in shot put and ran the 200 in 24.84 for a first-day score of 2975.
