Full-fledged Neurology Department operational

TIRUCHI: After the Government sanctioned establishment of a full-fledged Department of Neurology at the K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital earlier this year, the need for patients in need of neurological treatment to travel to Madurai, Thanjavur and Chennai has now been obviated.

The Director of Medical Education had taken to the notice of the Government the representation made last year by the hospital that a separate neurological Outpatient Wing was functioning thrice a week and about 130 new patients were being benefited through the Neurology Department.

The representation contained information that 350 to 400 old patients were being reviewed on a daily basis and 20 to 60 cases were being admitted for emergency treatment. Poor people from the district and the adjacent districts of Karur, Perambalur and Pudukkottai depend on this only Medical College Hospital in Tiruchi. Also referral cases from nearby government hospitals, primary health centres and hospitals under the control of Ordnance Factory, ESI and BHEL are also attended to at the K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital.

Since the proposal for starting post graduate courses in specialities of medicine, obsteritics, gynaecology and surgery were under the consideration for approval by the Medical Council of India, a full-fledged Neurology Department was a must, the Director of Medical Education had stated in a letter dated October 12, 2006. The need for creating a post of Reader in Neurology was also insisted upon in the letter.

In an order issued last month, the Director of Medical Education transferred M. Abdul Aleem, who was serving as Associate Professor of Neurology, Tirunelveli Medical College, as Associate Professor of Neurology, K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital and Neurologist, Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital.

During his previous stint as Assistant Professor of Neurology at the Medical College Hospital, Dr. Aleem was instrumental in carrying out researches and strengthening the case for creation of the full-fledged Department of Neurology.
