Land inspection team formed

Staff Reporter

Move follows directive from the State government

To probe illegal land transactions

Other districts to follow suit

KOCHI: An inspection-cum-vigilance team with powers to investigate illegal and unscrupulous land transactions has been formed in the district, District Collector M. Beena has said.

The move assumes significance in the wake of the dubious land transactions allegedly being made by suspected characters. The team was constituted as per specific directions from the State government. All districts are expected to put in place similar arrangement soon. The public can file complaints regarding land transactions before the team headed by Indira Devi, Deputy Collector (Revenue Recovery). The team is also empowered to take suo motu action by invoking the provisions of the Kerala Land Reforms Act whenever necessary. Meanwhile, the district administration is gearing up to act tough with those holding land in excess of the permitted limits. As per land provisions in the Kerala Land Reforms Act, an individual can hold up to 15 acres. Holdings in excess of this can be recovered by the State as excess land.

“We have got the entire land records in the district computerised. Presently, we are going through these records with the assistance of officials from the National Informatics Centre to identify those holding land in excess of 15 acres,” Dr. Beena said.
