COIMBATORE: M. Phil. and Ph. D. scholars at Bharathiar University can now submit their theses in Tamil. This is irrespective of the subject their thesis is based on, Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam told T he Hindu on Friday. “The presentation can be made in normal use Tamil. However, candidates are encouraged to present it in classical Tamil also. The best presentation in classical Tamil will be selected for the ‘Dr. Kalaignar Ariviyal Tamil’ Award. It will be given to the scholar at the convocation of the university,” the Vice-Chancellor added. He said the he was announcing this award to commemorate the 85th birthday of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. He believed that language should not be a barrier to undertaking research. Many candidates, who were eager to pursue research, shied from doing so because they had to present the thesis in English. Even now, most of them were getting the thesis written by others, who charged them a hefty sum. He said the research scholars were not able to present their findings in the way they wanted to because of the lack of resources in English. FreedomThe permission to allow them to write in Tamil would give them the freedom to present things better. Students, whose mother tongue was not Tamil, could write in their respective languages. A 50 per cent fee concession would also be given to those scholars who opted to present the thesis in Tamil. “If the thesis required translation, or required to be sent for an international publication, the university’s Department of Linguistics will do the needful,” Mr. Thiruvasagam said.
