Cricket camp concludes

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Hindu-sponsored summer coaching camps of the Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association concluded with the valedictory function held at the ACA-VDCA stadium here on Tuesday.

As many as 816 players, including 32 girls, in different age groups participated in the month-long camps held at eight centres, including Anakapalle and Bheemunipatnam towns. This was almost double the number of participants of the last year and the previous years.

Secretary of VDCA K. Parthasaradhi thanked The Hindu management for sponsoring the camps regularly for the last four years. About 250 promising players spotted in the camps were selected for trials to select 150 players who would be made to play in the district clubs leagues.

He also announced that a separate league for under-16 players would be started. The VDCA would allot six players selected from the summer camps to each team along with a woman player. Every club must have the woman player in its playing XI.

Chief of Bureau of The Hindu B. Prabhakkar Sharma appreciated VDCA for organising the camps successfully and advised the players to work hard an achieve success.

Regional General Manager of The Hindu T.V. Suresh thanked the parents for sending their children to the camps and extending support. The camps would be held on a larger scale next year, he said.

Director of the camps and former Ranji captain M.N. Ravikumar, VDCA treasurer G.J.J. Raju, joint secretaries J.K.M. Raju and A.P. Naidu also participated.

Chess championship

Nandamuri Balakrishna Charities Welfare Society (Vijayawada)-sponsored Padmasri N. T. Rama Rao second AP State open chess championship will be held at Film Chamber Hall, Vijayawada, from June 9 to 10. Entries close on June 8. Call 98665 19924.
