GANDHINAGAR: The journalists in Gujarat on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the Governor, Nawal Kishore Sharma, and the State Director General of Police, P. C. Pande, against the police complaint against the Ahmedabad edition of the Times of India and its local resident editor and a crime reporter. The complaint of “sedition and criminal conspiracy” was filed by the Ahmedabad city Police Commissioner, O. P. Mathur, after a series of articles in the newspaper alleging his past links with the underworld mafia dons and questioning his credibility to ensure safety and security to the people of Ahmedabad. The Governor even while making it clear the limitations of his office in dealing with such issues, promised to look into the matter and at the same time advised the media persons not to transgress the democratic rights and misuse the freedom of the press. Mr. Pande denied that there was any attempt to gag the press but refused to take any action to drop charges against the newspaper.
