Naren 13th

KOCHI: After a steady drive on the opening day, V.R. Naren Kumar was on a fast run on the second day on Saturday in the 55th BP Ultimate Acropolis Rally of Greece in Athens.

Naren, who finished the first day in the 18th spot, was 13th in the Production Class World Rally Championship after the second day.

He made his big move early on Saturday. He was impressive in the ninth special stageat Pissa, the day’s second, moving to the 13th spot. He fell back a rung a little after that with turbo problems, but regained the spot by the end of the day at Agia Triada. Naren is now 27th overall in the main rally, just two places behind the talented Chris Atkinson.

The Acropolis Rally lived up to its deadly reputation of being a car-breaker and many big names, including defending Production Class World champion Toshihiro Arai of Japan and overnight leader Nasser Al-Attiyah, were forced to retire on the second day. Both Arai and Al-Attiyah suffering suspension damage in the ninth stage. — Principal Correspondent
