Education is everyone’s responsibility, say SIO leaders

Special Correspondent

AWARENESS CAMPAIGN: The vehicle with pro-education messages being taken around by the volunteers of the Students Islamic Organisation in Mangalore on Saturday.

MANGALORE: The Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) launched on Saturday a two-day awareness drive on education here. It aims at creating awareness among people that education is not only a right but also a responsibility.

A vehicle, with pro-education messages stuck all around it and equipped with public address system, was inaugurated on Saturday. The volunteers of SIO propose to conduct public meetings at various places in the city and Bantwal on Saturday and Sunday. Pamphlets highlighting the fact that providing education to children is not only the responsibility of the Government but of every one will be distributed during this programme.

The organisation has been campaigning for education since May 20. Shaukat Ali, president of the Mangalore unit of SIO said that the organisation had helped about 100 students in getting scholarships during this campaign. It had opened a guidance centre at Hidayat Centre on B.B. Alabi Road in Bunder here to help poor children in joining schools. It would provide the parents with a list of 100 sources from where they could try for scholarships and ensure that their children continue their studies, Mr. Ali said. The in-charge of the centre, Asif Iqbal, can be contacted on 2422786.

Mr. Ali said that the SIO would organise parents’ meetings and guide them on education-related problems. “The organisation plans to arrange a mega event on June 27 in which parents and teachers and other concerned with education will be brought together to discuss problems related to education,” he said.
