V.S. Achuthanandan says government will take over Golf Club. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet on Saturday decided to increase the seats in higher secondary schools for Plus One admissions by 20 per cent. Briefing presspersons on the Cabinet decisions, the Chief Minister said the decision would have immediate effect with regard to government schools. In the case of aided schools, seats would be increased on a request from the school authorities before a stipulated date. The schools will be granted community and management quotas out of the seats sanctioned thus. Mr. Achuthanandan said the construction of the proposed Kannur airport would be contracted on a build, own and operate basis. The government would have 26 per cent share in the company to be formed for execution of the project. The private partner for execution of the project would be selected on the basis of a transparent bidding process. The Law Reforms Commission would be expanded with the former judge K.P. Radhakrishna Menon, N.S. Gopalakrishnan, Barrister M.P.R. Nair and lawyer Sahasranamam as members. The former Supreme Court judge V.R. Krishna Iyer will continue to be chairman of the Commission. The Chief Minister announced that the Cabinet had decided to take over 25.38 acres of land belonging to the Golf Club in Thiruvananthapuram. The departments of Sports, Revenue and Culture would be asked to submit a joint proposal on use of the land, he said. Mr. Achuthanandan said the Golf Club did not have proper records of its possession of government land. He said action would be taken against those who had constructed buildings over pipelines of the Kerala Water Authority in Thiruvananthapuram. The delay was on account of time required to complete proceedings such as issue of notices. He said the Cabinet had approved proposals for establishing Information Technology parks in Kollam, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Kannur and Kasaragod districts. The Revenue Department would hand over 25 to 100 acres of land acquired for the purpose in each district to the company formed to implement the project. An aqua technology park would be set up at Kadukallur, near Aluva, for development of ornamental fisheries at a cost of Rs.8 crore. Replying to questions, the Chief Minister said special economic zones (SEZ) would be sanctioned only after proper scrutiny. The government had received 17 applications for SEZ status. Of them, only seven owned land.
