CHENNAI: When the Class X examination results were declared on Friday, the city basked in the glory of its impressive share of toppers. Inspiring accounts of hard work translating to top scores, touching success stories and an overall pass percentage of 85.6 of the city students of the S.S.L.C., Matriculation, Anglo-Indian and O.S.L.C. streams, were reason enough for city students to celebrate. Student achieversS. Suvetha of St. Raphael’s Girls Higher Secondary School, Santhome, was overwhelmed by the reception she received from her friends and teachers. “I gave my best, but this rank came as a surprise. I am very, very, happy,” said the S.S.L.C. State second rank holder. Her parents K. Sundaram, a TNHB employee, and S. Premakumari said their daughter had worked really hard for this, with the support of her teachers. “Apart from academics, she is very good at embroidery. “She has brought a State rank to our school after 10 years,” said Sister Dulcy, principal of the school. While all the attention was on Suvetha who has scored 494, she was busy congratulating her friends who had also done well. “She is extremely helpful and really does a lot for us,” her close friend J. Savitah said. Emlin Mercy of Chengalpattu, with a total of 493, came third in the State in the S.S.L.C. stream. “The prayers of my parents and coaching given by teachers at St.Mary’s Girls Higher Secondary School has really helped me.” Daughter of Vathsalan, a lab technician and Siluvaigani, a nurse, she said she hoped to do well in her Class XII examinations as well in order to achieve her goal of becoming a doctor. In the Matriculation stream, too, the city had a good share of toppers. Varsha Raman of Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School in the city came second in the State among candidates including those with languages other than Tamil. Her total was 488. “I came to know about my rank only when I got the call from school. I aimed to score above 490. But, I’m glad that I scored close to my target,” she said. She plans to take up medicine in college.
M. Sandhya, of Krishnaswamy Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Villivakkam, bagged the overall State third rank among those with Tamil as the first language. Having scored a total of 487, she said, “I didn’t expect the rank. But my principal and school teachers were confident that I would get a State rank,” she said. The chirpy teenager, interested in architecture, said she has never received so many calls in one day. “I have been sitting beside the telephone since morning. I must have attended at least 50 calls by now. I am planning to celebrate by treating my friends to lunch.” Shravanthika Lakshmi S. of Alpha Marticulation Higher Secondary School, C.I.T. Nagar, who came third in the State among candidates including those studying languages other than Tamil, has opted for the commerce stream in Plus-Two. “I want to pursue chartered accountancy,” she said. The Harry Potter fan said though her father is a businessman and mother, a doctor, she is keen on pursuing C.A. To encourage her further, Alpha Group’s chairperson Grace George offered her a 100 per cent scholarship for the remaining two years. In the Anglo-Indian stream, Anushree Bansal of St. Kevin’s Anglo-Indian School, Royapuram, stood second in the State with a total of 485. “I take part in elocution competitions and love reading books when I find time,” she said. She has also chosen the Commerce stream. S. Vaishnavi of Railway Mixed Higher Secondary School, Perambur came third, scoring 484. “My dream is to become an I.A.S. officer,” she said. Mark sheets would be made available on June 14 at schools . Candidates who wish to apply for rechecking may obtain application forms between June 3 and 6. Candidates who wish to appear for the Special Supplementary Examinations may also obtain the application forms then . The Chennai Collectorate also announced scholarships for deserving candidates who topped the city in the BC/MBC and denotified communities categories from government schools.
