CHILAKALURIPET: The Congress is committed to upliftment of downtrodden classes and Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has been encouraging people from the Backward Classes at various levels implementing schemes for them, said Youth Congress State president T. Sudhakar, who launched the ‘Maro Praja Prasthanam’ here on Friday. Week-long padayatra programme covering two Assembly constituencies per day, would highlight the development in the State during Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s Government, he said and reminded people that owing to his initiative farmers were getting good price for their produce and several irrigation schemes were launched for them. Chilakaluripet MLA Marri Rajasekhar, Youth Congress district president Dasari Kiran Kumar and Zilla Parishad Chairperson Kuchipudi Vijaya also participated in the inaugural. They told people how they all hailing from the backward communities were given important positions in the party and public life. The people-friendly welfare schemes of Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy would be given wide publicity during the yatra till June 5 and a rally would be held to mark the concluding function at Pichikula Gunta in Guntur to be organised by Guntur-II MLA T. Venkata Rao. The Chief Minister would spend more than one hour and 30 minutes with the party cadre. The Rs. 2 a kg rice scheme launched by the Congress Government proved to be a boon for the poor at a time when the rice in open market was being sold between Rs.18 and Rs.22 a kg. Opposition parties which were levelling corruption charge everyday on Dr. Reddy failed to prove the charges, said Grandhalaya Samstha Chairman Kuchipudi Sambasiva Rao.
