Arrangements on for counting

Correspondent

The exercise to begin at 8 a.m. tomorrow

Polling percentage in the constituency is 54.08

Turnout of men is more

VIZIANAGARAM: Arrangements for counting of votes on June 1 are being made at Sri Dandu Maremma kalyanamandapam on the premises of Police Training College here. R. Tyagaraju, Returning Officer, who is supervising the arrangements, told reporters on Friday that the counting would begin exactly at 8 am. Fourteen tables were being arranged to take up counting in 11 rounds at the venue, he said.

Owing to lack of information from some stations the percentage of polling could not be announced till 9 p.m. on Thursday, Mr. Tyagaraju clarified. The percentage of polling was 54.08. In all 75,094 voters out of the total of 1,38,856 in the constituency exercised their franchise. The turnout of men was comparatively better than women. Some 56.60 per cent of men (38,079 voters out of 67,281) and 51.71 per cent of women (37,051 out of 71,525) have cast their votes.

The polling percentage in the constituency has dropped from 81 per cent (approximately) in the by-election to Bobbili Lok Sabha in 2006 to 54.08 now due to poor turnout of traditional Congress supporters. Bhimavaram (polling station-108), stronghold of Congress in Merakamudidam mandal, registered the lowest turnout of 11.55 per cent (114 voters out of the total electorate of 947) and Gangannapadu (PS-56 for men) recorded the highest with 84.17 per cent followed by Gangannapadu (PS-57 for women) with 80.50 per cent, Akulakatta (PS-95) 80.63 per cent, Antlavara (PS-17) 79.42 per cent and Pinnavalasa (PS-76) 78.98 per cent.
