AIDWA protest against Chennai Corporation proposal

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has protested the Chennai Corporation proposal to fine actions such as bathing or washing clothes and utensils in public.

It would be holding a protest demonstration in front of the Ripon Building on Wednesday morning.

It has urged the local body to reconsider the decision, as basic infrastructure that would prevent these is not present.

AIDWA has further alleged that the Corporation itself has failed its duty of regularly clearing garbage in several locations. Areas like Muthamizh Nagar, Amaranji Nagar and B.V. Colony are also severely affected by the problem of garbage falling off the open lorries carrying rubbish to the yards, according to a press release.

While the need for hygiene cannot be disputed, the plight of the homeless in areas such as Periamet, Thattankulam, Kesavapillai Poonga and Kuyapettai should not be ignored.

Other areas such as those near the Otteri burial ground have very few public toilets for a large number of Slum Clearance Board tenements.

The organisation has demanded that the Corporation increase manpower and infrastructure to ensure regular garbage clearance. It should also ensure that toilets with running water are available free of cost until all houses have been provided with toilets and provide water connections to all dwelling units on a war-footing.
