THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Department of Public Works will team up with the Coir Department to use coir geo-textiles in programmes to modernise and strengthen roads in the State, Public Works Mons Joseph has said. He was inaugurating a seminar on ‘The use of coir geo-textiles in roads’ jointly organised here on Tuesday by the Civil Engineering Department of the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram and the Coir Board. In his presidential address, Coir Minister G. Sudhakaran said the government would take steps to use coir geo-textiles for riverbank protection, to prevent soil erosion and in the construction sector. The government would also aid research programmes in the use of coir and coir products. Coir Board Chairman A.C. Jose, in his address, said the board was committed to providing economic and technical aid for the development of various coir products. FelicitatedT.S. Ramanatha Iyer, a researcher in the field of coir geo-products, was felicitated on the occasion, a press note issued here said.
