Thiruvananthapuram: The State-wide march taken out by the Indian Youth Congress activists demanding early implementation of the food security scheme turned violent in many parts of the State on Tuesday. The police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the violent agitators at many places leaving many injured. In Ernakulam, the march was taken out from the DCC office premises and inaugurated by Congress leader Benny Behanan. The activists tried to overpower the barricades erected by the police near the Kanayannur taluk office and there were stone throwing also. This led to altercation and the police burst tear gas shells. Four Youth Congress activists were injured. In Alappuzha, seven agitators and two policemen suffered injuries. The march, which began around 11.30 a.m., turned violent when the agitators tried to break the barricades put up by the police in front of the collectorate. The police resorted to a lathi-charge. Seven activists were injured in the lathi-charge. Two policemen too suffered injuries in the stone-throwing. Sanal Kumar is said to have suffered serious injuries. In Kozhikode, 15 persons were injured in the violence. The police lathi-charged the protesters who attempted to barge into the Collectorate complex. Three constables and sub-inspectors Abdul Karim of Elathur police station and Ganesh Kumar of Vellayil station were injured.
