Alert in western Uttar Pradesh

Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW: An alert has been declared in the eight districts of western Uttar Pradesh in the wake of Gujjar’s agitation in the neighbouring Rajasthan.

Additional Director-General of Police Brij Lal told journalists here on Monday that orders have been issued to the police chiefs of Saharanpur, Meerut, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida), Mathura and Agra for maintaining strict vigil.

Mr. Lal said six additional companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) have been deployed in these districts to prevent any untoward incident. He said there was no law and order problem in the State.

Clashes were reported on the Agra-Jaipur highway. On Sunday, some protesters reportedly sat on the rail tracks in Baghpat district. Protesters also reportedly staged a road blockade in Saharanpur district.

Reports reaching the State capital on Monday said that rail traffic in Gautam Buddha Nagar district (Noida) was affected. The protesters were dispersed by the police.
