The many shades of new-age woman

NEW DELHI: To celebrate the spirit of contemporary female thinking, an exhibition of 49 paintings by women artists titled “Pink is the new blue” has been mounted at Suruchi Art Gallery here.

A depiction of the fearless, bold and expressive new-age woman, the exhibition is a sincere attempt to understand women from their own perspective.

The essence of the exhibition is the depiction of women transcending the barriers of cliché that have dominated womanhood for a long time. The intention is not to show feminists as those who are repelled by the opposite sex but those who are attracted to their inner selves.

Paradoxical qualities

Suruchi Art Gallery managing director Sunita Gupta says: “Women everywhere have the paradoxical quality of effacing themselves and being assertive at the same time. Women artists have always captured this dichotomy in their creations and have played an important role in the evolution of various forms of art. The exhibition is our salute to women artists and their contribution to Indian art. This initiative is about promoting women artists.”

Award-winning artists

The works on display include those of award-wining artists such as Rini Dhumal, Anupam Sud, Gogi Saroj Pal, Jyotsana Bhatt, Kavita Nayyar, Shruti Gupta Chandra, Madhvi Parekh, Anjana Mehra and Kanchan Chander. Other artists whose works are being showcased are Ira Chaudhuari, Kristine Michael, Shukla Sawant, Surinder Kaur, Shruti Gupta Chandra, Meena Deora, Shipra Bhattacharya, Lalitha Lajmi, Kavita Deuskar,Neena Luthra and Papri Bose Mehta.

The works portray the oxymoronic shades of a woman who can be passionate yet aggressive, defined yet undefined, pretty yet ugly. The exhibition is also an endeavour to promote Indian art with a commitment to exploring artistic and cultural values through innovative and meaningful discourses.

The exhibition is open up to June 30.
