Sathiyan and Abishek receive awards

CHENNAI: G. Sathiyan and R. Abishek received the Players of the year awards during the TN Table Tennis Association’s awards day function at Balar Kalvi Nilayam here on Sunday. Cash prizes worth Rs. 65,000 were distributed to the players.

Sathiyan’s wonderful performances — winning the South Zone, Central Zone and East Zone tournaments and becoming the National champion in sub-junior boys singles category for the year 2006-07 — got him the award.

Abishek had won the South Zone, East Zone titles, apart from winning the prize money tournament in Baroda for the year 2007-08 in the youth (under-21) singles category. Those who represented India in 2006-07 and 2007-08, Sivananda Seshadri, R.S. Raja, Sathiyan, R. Venkatramanan, A. Rajath Kamal, A.V. Niveditha, K.K. Narmadha, J. Swarna, D.V. Sneha and Abishek, received cash prizes of Rs. 1,000 each.

Players who won medals in cadet, sub-junior, junior, men and women’s category at the Nationals were also honoured. Eleven coaches — V.M. Ravi Venkatesh, N.R. Srinivasan, V. Vasu, R. Ramesh Babu, V. Suresh Kumar, Christopher Anas, J. Selvkumar, Thirunavukarasu, C. Sathya Murthy, B. Sundar and Andrews — were also given cash prizes.
