Sports Correspondent

THE CHAMPIONS: The MEG (Bangalore) team, which won the all-India football tournament at Kayalpatnam on Sunday

Kayalpatnam: Madras Engineering Group and Centre (Bangalore) lifted the Maulana Abulkalam Azad Memorial Trophy defeating Nethaji Sports Club (Chennai 2-0) in the final of the 43rd annual all-India football tournament here on Sunday.

MEG dominated proceedings right from the word go but Nethaji’s defence thwarted its attacks successfully in the first session.

However, in the second session MEG regrouped its players and attacked strongly as the Nethaji defence wilted under pressure.

In the 57th minute Lokeshwar Singh sent a cross from the right off which Nigilraj shot at the goal. Nethaji goalkeeper Satheesh blocked the ball but Nigilraj pounced on the rebound and scored.

Eight minutes later Nigilraj consolidated the position heading in a fine cross from Vineeth from the right.

T.P.M. Mohideen, Minister for Sports, gave away the prizes.
