Organ donation

Thanks for the informative article (Kidneys aren’t for burning.....) about organ donation. It is only because of a lack of knowledge and false beliefs that people are reluctant to come forward to donate organs. I request the government to bring in awareness about organ donation.

The article by Dr. M.K. Mani was indeed intensely persuasive. However, there is one crucial unaddressed issue: Prospective donors, despite their right attitude of philanthropy, are turned off due to concerns over foul-play. What if as a result of pre-authorising hospitals to remove healthy organs after death the donor becomes a victim of unsolicited scheming by unscrupulous doctors in hospitals that trade in vital organs? How can one ensure that such pre-authorisation will not become the cause of death? What measures exist to avert such a situation?

T.K.P. Nair,

North Paravur (Kerala)

Concurrently with an awareness drive on organ donation, I strongly advocate the implementation of a Spanish system, one of the most successful transplantation systems in the world wherein non-heart beating donation is permitted unless the deceased person has expressly objected to or rejected it.

It is well-known that ignorance of the population, including those of the educated segment, coupled by hazy legal system has made organ transplantation in the country the epicentre of scandals. We need an effective legal process and policing to enable a scandal-free and society-friendly organ donation system with strong physical and emotional people participation.

Mangalore
