Merry-making: Students of corporate colleges bursting crackers to celebrate their achievement in EAMCET-2008 in Visakhapatnam on Saturday.

HYDERABAD: The EAMCET-2008 results showcased the domination of corporate colleges yet again with majority of the top 10 ranks taken by their students even as the release of results were marred by protests from student groups and record number of marks added to students’ marks.

All the students were added five marks in the medicine stream and four marks in the engineering stream as incorrect answers were given in the examination. In the Engineering stream, students who chose options 2 or 3 for question No. 4 were given full marks. Similarly, in the medicine stream students who chose option 4 got full marks. However, option 1 was also considered correct in the initial key given by the EAMCET Committee.

The APSCHE Chairman K.C. Reddy and the Principal Secretary of Higher Education Ashutosh Mishra, who released the results, admitted the mistakes and owned the responsibility. Mr. Mishra said that errors were more than expected and the government will bring in some changes in the process of clearing the papers before sending for printing and during the proof-checking. He said 2,51,737 students qualified in the engineering stream with the pass percentage put at 94.8 per cent while in the medical stream it was 94.5 per cent with 75,353 candidates clearing the test.

Prof. Reddy said counselling would begin in the first week of July and efforts would be made to start classes by August.

He hoped that this would be possible since the AICTE has not promised that no new college would be sanctioned after June.

They would not wait for AIEEE and IIT counselling to be completed as was the case during the past. He said the State already has 338 engineering colleges offering 1.21 lakh seats while another 70 colleges had applied with the AICTE for permission.

In the pharmacy stream 13,300 seats are on offer in 224 colleges while 30 new colleges have applied for permission. In the medicine stream 3,470 seats are available in 26 colleges.
