Six trampled to death by elephants
Kolkata: Six persons were trampled to death earlier this week in the Joypur area of West Bengal’s Purulia district by wild elephants believed to have strayed in from adjoining Jharkhand — a development that wildlife officials here say is “unprecedented.”
Four persons were killed on Tuesday and two others on Wednesday.
“It is believed that a group of four bull elephants have entered the area from Jharkhand and hunters armed with tranquilliser guns and two kunki elephants have been sent there to track them down,” Chief Wildlife Warden S.S. Bist told The Hindu here on Thursday. Some persons injured by the elephants have been hospitalised.
