Vishnu’s murder: three more held

Staff Reporter

The CPI(M) activist was killed on April 1

Police warn of retaliatory strike

Thiruvananthapuram: The police have arrested three more Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activists in connection with the daylight murder of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) activist Vishnu in front of the Regional Passport Office at Vanchiyoor here on April 1.

S. Sanal Kumar, Assistant Commissioner, Shanghumughom, said the suspects will be shown to witnesses at an identity parade presided over by a magistrate. He said revealing the identity of the suspects at this juncture would prejudice the judicial proceedings.

Mr. Sanal said the suspects figured as accused in several other crimes registered at Vanchiyoor and Pettah police stations.

He said the arrested youths were part of the 12-member RSS hit team which killed Vishnu. Six of the assailants were driving motorbikes. Machete-wielding activists, who were riding pillion on the motorbikes, killed Vishnu in the presence of over 500 people.

TThe police initially investigated a few alleged gang leaders. However, they did not find any evidence linking the underworld to the crime.

Simultaneously, investigators found that some RSS workers in the Vanchiyoor area were absconding. They collected their mobile phone numbers and that of prominent RSS organisers.

The police collected the call details of over 50,000 mobile phones that were used in the Vanchiyoor area between 9.30 a.m. and 10.30 a.m. on April 1. An analysis of the call records helped the police trace the suspects and establish their presence at the scene of crime.

The police said an absconding gang leader suspected to be in Dubai was planning the murder of a top RSS leader in the district in retaliation for Vishnu’s murder.

The police said they had information that some persons with underworld links in the city had flown to Dubai to meet the wanted man. The police are intensifying surveillance of gangs and persons known to have links with the criminal fraternity in the district.
