Project estimated to cost a total of Rs.60 crore It will be able to slaughter 60 cattle, 250 goats Chennai: The long awaited modernisation project of the Perambur abattoir may finally take off. The proposed modernised plant is expected to have a capacity of slaughtering 60 cattle and 250 goats an hour. Waste management and effluent treatment plants would be set up as part of the project estimated to cost a total of Rs.60 crore. The Chennai Corporation has invited bids from firms for a design-build-operate-transfer contract to modernise the slaughterhouse. The facility is used to slaughter about 1,000 goats and 250 cattle everyday. Residents have been unhappy over the project’s delay as solid waste and waste water generated from the abattoir polluted the locality. Untreated water is let into the Otteri canal, said residents. The modernisation was announced seven years ago. In the past, several tenders had been floated for the project but none materialised due to various factors such as a legal case involving one of the bidders for the project and cancellation of tenders when bidders did not meet financial requirements. The Chennai Corporation has three abattoirs. The Villivakkam abattoir has been modernised and about 80 per cent of the project at Saidapet slaughterhouse has been completed, Mayor M. Subramanian said at the Corporation Council meeting held earlier this month.
