CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala accepted the resignation of Social Welfare Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna on the recommendation of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday.
She had submitted her resignation on May 14 following a controversy over her telephone conversation with the Director of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption S.K. Upadhyay about a corruption case involving her relative.
A Raj Bhavan communiqué said the subjects held by Dr. Poongothai had been allocated to Geetha Jeevan, Minister for Animal Husbandry, now re-designated as Minister for Social Justice.
The subjects include Women and Children Welfare, Nutritious Noon Meal, Disable Welfare, Orphanages and Correctional Administration and Integrated Child Development. Pongalur Palanisamy, Minister for Rural Industries, has been given the Animal Husbandry department as an additional subject. He has been re-designated as Minister for Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry.
