CHENNAI: In response to a news report, “Central Prison courting controversy,” the Chief Superintendent of Jails, Jail Department, Puducherry, K. Durga Prasad, explained that with regard to the death of three under trial prisoners in 2005, criminal investigation by the police is still pending. Based on the one-man enquiry commission report, departmental proceedings have been initiated against six jail personnel including Superintendent of Jail, N. Jayagandan. Mr.Prasad said appropriate disciplinary action will follow after the receipt of the findings of the inquiry officers concerned. As regards the suicide of the life convict prisoner, Kamal Shah, had undergone psychological treatment at the Institute of Mental Health, Kilpauk, Chennai, a month before the incident. The convict had attempted suicide earlier. Since the matter is under judicial enquiry, the outcome of the same requires to be awaited, he added. A number of steps have been taken to strengthen security in the Central Prison, Puducherry, in the last one year. The measures include daily checking of the prison for prohibited articles, strict checking of visitors, proper enforcement of prison rules, induction of company of IR Battalion and Home Guards and close supervision of internal administration. As and when any prohibited item like cell phone is recovered, strict legal action has been taken against the prisoners concerned. Recovery of mobile phones from the prison cells is a frequent occurrence in most of the jails in neighbouring Tamil Nadu and other States. As compared to other States, such a recovery is much less frequent in the Central Prison, Puducherry. In order to fill up the five vacant post of Assistant Superintendent of Jail, direct recruitment process has been initiated.
