Chennai: The Kuruvila Jacob Memorial Educational Trust will continue its programme for excellence in education in Chennai Corporation schools during the forthcoming academic year.

The trust will take up a cluster of 10 schools, where senior teachers would be introduced to quality management concepts in education. The trust has already worked with several Corporation schools over the past three years.

Corporation officials and members of the trust held a discussion at the Ripon Building on Monday. Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said the trust offered support in setting up a quality improvement cell for education at the Corporation.

Also, three schools would be identified to develop as model schools.

Mayor M. Subramanian said the number of students enrolled in Corporation schools had increased from 1.18 lakh in 2006 to 1.33 lakh.

This year, the Corporation would buy 20,000 benches and desks at a cost of Rs.5 crore for the schools. It would appoint 30 counsellors to help students with psychological problems.
