Police directed to probe death of teenager

Final report sought within two months
Officer trying to hush up the matter, alleges petitioner

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has directed the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Central Crime Branch, to investigate the death of a 19-year-old girl in a Perungudi private hospital in December 2007, and submit a final report within two months, it if has not been filed already.

Justice M. Jeyapaul gave this direction on a petition filed under Section 482 of the Criminal Procedure Code seeking to direct the Assistant Commissioner to conclude the investigation in crime number 933 of 2007 on the file of the Thoraipakkam police station.

The petitioner, Binny, father of the deceased girl, submitted that he had lodged a complaint at Thoraipakkam police station pertaining to the death of his daughter due to medical malpractice and negligence. Her liver had been damaged, which resulted in instant death, he alleged, adding that the investigation had been transferred to the Assistant Commissioner of Police and it was pending.

The petitioner alleged that as the doctor who had been the cause of the girl’s death was a government employee the investigation officer was dragging the investigation and trying to hush up the matter.
