Coal prices won’t hurt power plants

CHENNAI: Coal prices might have gone through the roof, but for now Tamil Nadu, a State that derives more than a third of its power from coal-based plants, is sitting pretty.

The reason: at a time when no one expected that coal prices would leap skyward, the State entered into an agreement with MMTC, international trading organisation set up by the Union Government.

“We are safe for the current financial year,” Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami said.
